This common loon family (Gavia immer) proudly floats by in full parade formation. The baby chick is peering out from under the mother’s wing unable to comprehend the many obstacles that life has in store for them, but it was so gratifying for me to witness this rare and special moment. I have watched this nesting sight for a long time. Her last successful hatch was seven years ago. Heavy rains in mid June here in Nova Scotia usually end in her nest getting submerged before the chick is hatched.
